About this hotel
The Grand Hotel Terme sits in a position no other hotel on Lake Garda can claim: inside the medieval walls of Sirmione, on the lakefront, on top of the same Boiola thermal spring that has been drawing people to this peninsula since the 1880s. Three minutes’ walk gets you to the Scaliger Castle and to Catull’s Grottoes; thirty seconds gets you to a private thermal pool kept at 34-36°C twelve months a year.
Who it’s for
This is the upper end of Lake Garda hotels — five-star, with the price tag to match. It rewards three kinds of traveller. First, couples who want wellness without leaving the lake: the in-house Aquarium Spa is the most ambitious in Sirmione, with thermal mud treatments, a Roman-style calidarium, and lake-view treatment rooms that justify the day-spa upcharge. Second, anyone who wants to be inside Sirmione’s old town rather than across the bridge — you walk to dinner and don’t need the car. Third, the small wellness conference crowd: there are meeting rooms with lake views, and the hotel hosts off-site teams from northern Italian companies regularly.
Rooms
Around 60 rooms across four categories: Classic (city-side, smallest), Superior (some lake views), Junior Suite (lake-view balcony, the sweet spot), and a handful of full suites in the historic wing. The Junior Suites are the ones to book — the lake-view balcony is the whole point of being inside Sirmione, and the bathroom marble + thermal-water bath taps are the kind of detail that earn the five stars.
Dining
Two restaurants. Salus Per Aquam is the headline — a Michelin-recommended lakeside dining room serving northern Italian and Mediterranean dishes, heavy on the lake fish (lavarello, coregone) and Bardolino wine list. Book ahead even as a guest. L’Osteria is the more casual lunchroom — terrace seating, lighter plates, great for between spa appointments. Breakfast is on the lakefront terrace and is genuinely good (proper pastries, eggs to order, fresh juice).
What’s nearby
You’re inside Sirmione. Five minutes’ walk: the Scaliger Castle (€8 entry, climb it). Ten minutes: Catull’s Grottoes (€10 entry, allow an hour). For day trips, Desenzano is 15 minutes by car, Verona 40 minutes, Garda town 25 minutes around the south shore. The hotel will arrange boat pickups from the private jetty — useful for the boat tours that skip the harbour queue.
Our honest take
It’s expensive. €280/night in shoulder season climbs past €450 in July and August, and you’ll spend another €60-80 per person on dinner. But the value is real: the thermal water is genuine (most “spa hotels” on Lake Garda use heated tap water), the location inside the walls cannot be replicated, and the service operates at a level you do not get at most four-star Italian hotels. If you’re picking one indulgence on a Lake Garda trip and you care about wellness, this is the one we’d pick.
