About this hotel
Villa Calicantus is a proper agriturismo — meaning it is primarily a working farm (in this case, an organic and biodynamic Bardolino wine estate) and only secondarily a place that takes guests. Daniele Delaini, who runs it with his family, makes some of the most thoughtful Bardolino Chiaretto on the east shore; the seven rooms in the restored stone farmhouse exist because guests kept asking if they could stay, not because the family set out to be hoteliers. That’s what makes it good.
Who it’s for
Travellers who want Lake Garda but want to wake up in vineyards, not on the lakefront. The vista from the property is the upper east shore — Bardolino’s tiled rooftops below, the lake stretching south to Sirmione on a clear day, the Lessini hills behind. You’re a 20-minute walk down through the vines to the lakefront promenade. Specifically, this works for: wine-curious couples on a slow shoulder-season trip, returning regulars who want a single base for a week, and small groups who can take the whole property (sleeps 14 across all seven rooms). It is not the right choice if you want a busy hotel with multiple restaurants, evening entertainment, or proximity to a lake beach.
Rooms
Seven rooms only, no two alike, all restored in 2021 to a quietly tasteful standard — exposed stone, modern bathrooms, linen bedding, antique pieces from the family. The two junior suites are larger with a private terrace; the standard rooms are smaller but each has a window onto either the vineyards or the inner courtyard. No televisions in rooms. Wi-fi works fine for one device at a time.
Dining
Breakfast is included and is one of the better ones on Lake Garda — Daniele’s mother bakes the cakes and bread; eggs come from the farm next door; the honey is from the property’s own hives. Dinner is not served every night — typically twice a week as a producer-led tasting menu paired with the estate’s wines (€55-75 per person, book ahead). On other nights you walk down into Bardolino, which is rich with restaurants — try Trattoria Da Mario or, for fish, Aurora. A cellar tasting (one of the estate’s seven Bardolino cuvées) is included once per stay; longer tastings can be added.
What’s nearby
You’re 20 minutes’ walk (10 by car) from Bardolino lakefront. Lazise is 15 minutes by car south; Garda town 8 minutes north. The Bardolino wine route loops directly behind you — many of the best small producers are within 15 minutes’ drive. The boat dock in Bardolino has ferries to Sirmione (45 minutes) and Malcesine (1h15). Gardaland is 12 minutes by car, Verona 35 minutes. The estate keeps bikes for guests and the routes through the vine rows make for excellent late-afternoon rides.
Our honest take
This is the right answer if you’ve already done a Lake Garda hotel trip and want the next-level experience. The downsides: you need a car or you’ll feel a bit stranded (taxis from the lakefront cost €10-15 each way); there’s no spa or pool in the spa-resort sense; if it rains for three days, you’ll wish you’d booked somewhere with more indoor space.
The upside is that you’ll meet the family who makes the wine you’re drinking, you’ll fall asleep to the smell of olive trees, and you’ll pay €135-180/night for an experience that is genuinely difficult to find elsewhere on Lake Garda.
